Tiki Kon Round Up

Filed under: personal — tikimama @ 12:23 pm

Tiki Kon went smashingly, it was a great success (which is fortunate, since we spend so much time planning it!). We received an unexpected boost from a piece in Thursday’s (June 22) Oregonian Living section, with a charmingly gothic cover photo (I have a mediocre scan here). The weekend was exhausting and exhilarating and we only had one causality (K’s class 2 sprained ankle in the line of duty).

Unlike last year, I am already thinking about next year and what to do differently, etc. I guess that means I had a good time! I am waiting for pics to trickle in, I had no time to take any. I expect Budgie to be in a fair amount of them, he was quite popular (and well dressed). I’ll keep you all posted about Tiki Kon ‘07!

Right now, I am slowly returning to my regular life. I say slowly since my ultra glam sister (in law) is visiting for the weekend and I plan to shop, drink, eat and shop my way through Independence Day. I may eventually remember how to work and study. Eventually.

Summer Purchases

Filed under: Fashion — tikimama @ 9:58 pm

I’ve been shopping lately - I found a shopping buddy (Hi K!) and this is sort of good and sort of bad. I will stay committed to my bargain way of life!

In that vein, here is what I bought this week, for summer. If it ever arrives. Stupid, stupid rain!

I have this brown and cream skirt with gold sequins (my mom bought it for me a few months ago):

Ethincy Skirt
$?, Ross

which I get more compliments on that anything else in my wardrobe–people stop me on the street. It’s crazy! In any case, I really like it and was looking for something else in the same vein. With sequins, because can you ever wear enough.

I bought this skirt last week:

Pink & Brown Skirt
$18, Ross
Pink! Brown! Pink sequins! Fab. I bought a pair of pink & brown Converse, too.

However, my colors for summer are orange and lime green. To this end, I have purchased another pair of Franco Sarto shoes (I’m not especially into the brand, they just keep showing up at the Goodwill!) in a fantastic basket weave. I think you’ll agree they are tres Summer of Disco.

Disco Shoes
$5.99, Goodwill
So far, people keep saying “they’re…..green.” I bought a purse to match the new color scheme:

Straw Purse
$18, Ross

It smells just like fresh hay and has a drawstring liner, which is perfect since straw purses tend to be closure-less.

Anyway, that was my wee shopping spree. Hope you enjoyed it! What are you colors for Summer? Fabulous new purchases?

Pdx Fashion

Flypaper has a bit about our locals here.

I was madly in love with a blue and white satin dress (very haute Alice in Wonderland) at Seaplane. It had two problems: it only came up to a size 10 (I’m a 16) and it was $298. Adam Arnold’s stuff is gorgeous, but suffers from the same issues.

I hear that Duchess Clothier is doing a fashiony thing for the larger girl (to size 20). I am planning to head over there after I am realised from the bonds of NW Tiki.

Wardrobe Refashion

Filed under: Fashion — tikimama @ 10:00 am

Lately (when taking 2 seconds from work and the Tiki-Kon planning) I’ve been obsessing over the Wardrobe Refashion 06 blog.

Here is their pledge:

The Wardrobe Refashion Pledge

I _____________,

Pledge that I shall abstain from the purchase of “new” manufactured items of clothing, for the period of 2 / 4 / 6 months.

I Pledge that I shall refashion, renovate, recylcle pre-loved items for myself for the term of my contract.

I Pledge that I shall create and craft items of clothing for myself with my own hands in fabric, yarn or other medium for the term of my contract.

I Pledge that I will share the love and post a photo of my refashioned, renovoated, recylcled, crafted or created item of clothing on the Wardrobe Refashion blog, so that others may share the joy that thy thriftyness brings!

It is really inspiring to see what people are doing. I actually got around to one of my 5 years long “I’m going to shorten that skirt” projects (pictures forthcoming, I need to take it in, too big!) and it felt wonderful. I have a whole box full of “someday” clothes that I need to chuck or fix. This site it totally my inspiration!

More Summer Fashion

Filed under: Fashion, personal — tikimama @ 9:08 pm

I should be writing XML, but instead I keep thinking about summer fashions. Can you tell I’m ready for school to be O-V-E-R?

Things I want to get for summer:

  • a cotton kelly green v-neck sweater (actually, I’ve been looking for one of these for years)
  • White framed plastic sunglasses
  • A wide brown leather belt
  • A white skirt–a line or prairie type

I haven’t looked online for any of this stuff, I should finish this XML…

Fashion from the Front Lines

Filed under: Fashion — tikimama @ 10:37 am

My girlfriend Leslie just returned from Italy, and reports that this summer, Italians are wearing:

  • cowboy boots (very ornamented ones) with shorts or skirts
  • ultra stylish “fashion” trainers
  • sandals, sandals, sandals
  • an ethnic-y Indian sort of look
  • “lots of glitter on the ass of jeans”
  • big sunglasses
  • wedges and espadrilles

So, the Italians obviously got my memo about the Summer of Disco. I am so on board: wedges, check. Big sunglasses, check.

Clearly I need:

cowboy boots

Green Boots
Fornarina, $ 201.95
I like these against my will, but I think they are a bit limiting.
Pink Boots
Lucchese, $ 230.95 Lucchese + Pink = Super Awesome Rad
Tan Boots
Durango, $ 88.95 I think these are my best bet. Neutral, reasonably priced.

I actually used to compete in horse shows, you know. I had a green cowboy hat and everything, I should find a picture.

Also, glitter ass jeans. I have a Bedazzler, watch out!
